Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i
Activities & Attractions
A few contented
souls never venture beyond the Kailua-Kona area, famous for its
big-game, deep-sea fishing grounds.
Most visitors, however, are eager to experience the Big Island of Hawai'i.
It
boasts two of the
world’s most active volcanoes – Kilauea and
Mauna Loa.
Dormant Mauna Kea is actually taller than Mount Everest when measured from its base on the ocean
floor! Drive the rugged Ka'u Coast to the Hawai'i
Volcanoes National Park.
Some of the
island's most spectacular scenery is north of Kona.
Along the Kohala
Coast, the verdant hills of the
countryside roll down to the ocean
where you'll find some of the island's best swimming beaches.
Catch your breath in the small ranch towns of Waimea and
Kamuela before continuing around the
Hamakua
Coast to Hilo. Stop at the Waipio Valley Lookout,
Akaka Falls State Park, and the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden to
see huge monkeypod trees and more than 1,000 species of plants.
Another scenic
drive takes you south of Kailua-Kona to Captain Cook’s historical
monument at Kealakekua Bay.
A few miles and a few lava flows beyond is the City of
Refuge, a National Historic Park.
Back at your
Royal Aloha condominium, there are tennis courts, a swimming pool,
and barbecue areas at the Keauhou-Kona Surf & Racquet Club.
It's fun to go to the Kailua pier and watch the fishing fleet glide
in with the day's catch around 4:00 p.m. It's even more fun to
charter a fishing boat and angle for your own big billfish!
When the sun
goes down, enjoy an evening of fine dining and Hawaiian
entertainment.
