The "Big Island" is the youngest and largest island of the
Hawaiian chain born more than 25 million years ago and still
building as active, powerful volcanoes spew fiery lava into the
sea adding new acreage. Five volcanic mountains, two of which
are still active, make up the island's 4,000 square miles.

barren lava fields and hillsides abloom with wild orchids and
