“Doughnuts without a hole”

If you have attended our complimentary Tuesday morning briefings at Royal Aloha Vacation Club in Waikiki, you probably remember those delicious coffee cakes that are served with fresh fruit, coffee and passion orange guava juice. Well those tasty pecan, cream cheese and almond coffee cakes come from a little hole-in-the-wall bakery called Leonard’s Bakery. Located on Kapahulu Avenue, Leonard’s is only about one mile from your vacation club.

Leonard’s is celebrating its 60th anniversary this summer and has been featured on the Travel Channel and the Food Network’s “Follow That Doughnut.” My favorite Leonard’s treats are their Portuguese malasadas – they’re a heavenly indulgence for a mere 90 cents! Some of the most popular flavors are cinnamon, Li Hing, custard, chocolate dobash, coconut haupia – even the plain old sugar is really ‘ono. I now serve Leonard’s malasadas at my Coffee Hour on Thursday mornings, so I hope you’ll join me from 9:00-10:00 (Unit 9E at Aloha Towers) for a hot malasada treat and a cup of freshly brewed Kona Coffee!

See you soon in Waikiki…

TODAY ONLY……THESE DELECTABLE BALLS OF DOUGH ARE JUST 60 CENTS!  NOW THAT’S A SUGARY DEAL!

Queen’s Surf Café & Lanai

Ok, if you read this blog regularly, you know I love great food…cheap food is even better. So when I find a place that has a postcard view, prices mostly under $10, and the food is great, I’m a happy camper!

I discovered Queen’s Surf Café & Lanai through friends who literally stumbled onto the place. It’s located right on Queen’s Beach near the Waikiki Aquarium. Just look for the bright red umbrellas. Meals are served on wooden plates, and your fellow diners are decked out in swimsuits, t-shirts and rubber slippers.

Breakfast is served all day long. Their eggs benedict….out of this world! Or how about a traditional Japanese breakfast of fresh fish, rice, eggs, salad and miso soup….all for just $11! Lunch offers both fresh Mahi Mahi and Ahi Burgers with sweet potato fries. They light the Tiki Torches at dinner and offer everything from fresh pastas and seafood to upscale vegetarian plates.

Come for dinner on Friday evening and enjoy the free fireworks show at 7:45.

Here’s an unwritten rule of the place… They turn a blind eye if you show up with your own bottle of wine or a few cold beers. They also feature live music four days a week. So what are you waiting for? Queen’s Surf Café & Lanai is a short 20-minute walk from Royal Aloha Vacation Club in Waikiki. Dress down and bring your appetite!

Have a Poppin’ Good 4th of July!

Enjoy a Fourth of July Spectacular Fireworks Show from Ala Moana Shopping Center! It’s just a quick bus ride away from Royal Aloha Vacation Club in Waikiki.

The seating area fronting Sears opens at 4:00 p.m., and live entertainment starts at 5:00. Seats are first-come, first-served and fill up quickly. Musical lineup includes HAPA band mates Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au.
